One of the most biggest problems of air travel is getting your luggage back at the end of the trip. For some reason more luggage is being lost now than ever before, and it’s quite a headache for the airlines – not to mention the people who are flying.
Traveling can be such a pleasant experience. Damaged or lost or luggage can sure make the trip less than memorable, though. Many airlines now have much stricter guidelines when it comes to reimbursing for lost luggage. So, here are some helpful tips on how to avoid and prevent lost luggage when traveling with expensive belongings.
- Check in early enough. Increase your chances of being among the 99 percent whose bags are waiting at the end of a flight by checking in at least 30 minutes before flight time, allowing at least an hour for connecting flights, or more for international flights, having a name tag and distinguishing marks on the outside of your luggage and not over stuffing the suitcase.
- Consider luggage insurance. You can purchase additional luggage coverage by paying the airlines an added fee for a higher value for your luggage when you check in. You can also get insurance on luggage through your insurance agent. If luggage is lost, fill out the paperwork at the airport and then notify your agent.
- Make a list of what is in your luggage. A good idea is to make a list of all the contents of your luggage, and for heavens sake don’t keep it in your luggage. In the case of lost luggage the airline will want some type of proof of purchase and they may still deduct a percentage of the cost depending on the age of the article.
- Hand carry your medication and other important items. Any medication or anything that is irreplaceable, valuable, breakable or fragile should be hand-carried in a bag that will fit under the seat. This way if your checked luggage is lost you will still have these items.
