You’re not much of a winter sports fan, you don’t care for snow or for going to the mountains? And yet, you need a break or a shorter or longer vacation? Here’s where you could spend a long weekend or even ten days if you can spare the time…
Greece, for example, Athens
When we mention Greece, the first thing that comes to mind is summer holidays, beaches, warm sea, parasols… However, think of the crowds, tourist invasions on historical landmarks and places (which in Greece can be found in abundance). You can avoid all that if you choose to visit this historical cradle of civilization in autumn or winter months. There are plenty of cities to choose from. Athens, ok, why not, but not only Athens. Spread the map of this beautiful country and pick any city or island: your choice will be spot on.
Hans Christiana Andersen’s home country is an ideal destination if you dream about a fairytale weekend. The magical Copenhagen will keep you spellbound with its historical buildings, cosy bars and restaurants, and the unique Scandinavian atmosphere. The sumptuous Royal Palace, the famous Little Mermaid statue, the colourful Nyhavn harbour and the interesting architecture will make you fall in love with the city at first sight.
Transylvania, with its Bran Castle, built in 1226 – home to Dracula, the most notorious vampire in the world (though it’s doubtful that he ever set foot in his so-called castle), is reason enough to spend a long weekend in the region. Some history, a lot of natural beauties, and an interesting trip a bit off the beaten path is guaranteed.
In winter months, the French claim Paris and France back. While Paris swarms with tourists during the summers, in the off season you can relax and enjoy the croissants in the mornings, the Latin Quarter, the Louvre… Before you go, visit the websites of the museums and other places you plan to visit. You can learn about the free museum days, for example, or buy tickets online to avoid the queues. In case you wish to go up the Eiffel Tower and you haven’t already bought or booked your tickets, you’d better be prepared to queue for hours. Paris is also the fashion capital of the world, so if you wish to go shopping, find out about the sales on time and you’ll save some money.
